Choosing a considerate rest stop

A good pause gives you room to recover while keeping the path and the place usable.

Start with what you can observe

Look for a durable surface where stopping will not block a narrow path, gate or crossing. Consider shelter, footing and the ease of getting moving again. Avoid trampling vegetation to reach a more photogenic seat. In a busy place, leave enough room for others to pass comfortably and follow any local guidance about where visitors should remain.

Change one thing at a time

Keep food and loose belongings contained so nothing is carried away by wind. Take litter home, including small scraps that may appear harmless, and avoid feeding wildlife. If you are walking with others, choose a stopping place that suits the whole group rather than the quickest person to reach it. A pause should make the remainder of the outing easier.

A small exercise

On a familiar route, identify two possible rest stops with different levels of shelter. Notice when each is useful and when either would obstruct other visitors. Keep the alternatives in your route notes. Conditions and local rules can change, so make the final choice when you arrive rather than treating a previous good spot as permanently suitable.
